Lilac ‘Paul Thirion’

Syringa vulgaris

Features

  • Fragrant

Description

Dense eggplant-purple buds open to reveal lilac and pale-lavender ultra-double blooms, giving this variety a three-toned effect. Panicles are so dense and tightly packed with petals that they barely resemble a lilac. This lightly scented variety is a healthy, vigorous grower.

Details

Height: 8 to 12 ft
Bloom time: late
Site: full sun

Harvesting/Vase Life

Harvest when one-half to three-quarters of the flowers on the bloom cluster are open and immediately remove most or all of the leaves. Using heavy clippers, recut the stem ends, slice vertically up the stem 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm), and twist backward. Plunge the cut stems immediately into cool water. You can also use Quick Dip and then place stems into water with hydrator. Expect a vase life of 5 to 6 days.
