Black-eyed Susan ‘Macau’

Rudbeckia triloba

Features

  • Medium producer
  • Pollinator-friendly

Description

Of all the black-eyed Susans I’ve ever grown, this is my absolute favorite. By midsummer, this variety can easily reach a towering height of up to 6 ft tall, with individual plants producing up to 25 stems each! The miniature-size flowers are borne in airy sprays, and when added to arrangements, they bring a happy, uplifting quality.

Details

Plant type: annual
Height: 5 to 6 ft
Site: full sun
Days to maturity: 90 to 100 days
Plant spacing: 9 in
Pinch: not necessary

Seed Sowing & Growing Notes

Start seed indoors in trays 8 to 10 weeks before last frost; transplant out after all danger of frost has passed.

Harvesting/Vase Life

Harvest when flowers are just beginning to open. Black-eyed Susans are notorious for making their water dark and murky overnight, even with floral preservative. To combat this, add a few drops of bleach to the water. Expect a vase life of 7 to 10 days.
