Lilac ‘Monge’

Syringa vulgaris

Features

  • Fragrant

Description

This variety has deep-purple buds that open to large single flowers of a deep eggplant purple. The wavy, heavily reflexed petals give the blooms a textural, hydrangea-like appearance. The lightly scented flowers quickly fade to a silvery-metallic eggplant purple.

Details

Height: 8 to 12 ft
Bloom time: late
Site: full sun

Harvesting/Vase Life

Harvest when one-half to three-quarters of the flowers on the bloom cluster are open and immediately remove most or all of the leaves. Using heavy clippers, recut the stem ends, slice vertically up the stem 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm), and twist backward. Plunge the cut stems immediately into cool water. You can also use Quick Dip and then place stems into water with hydrator. Expect a vase life of 5 to 6 days.
